Today we wanted to take a moment to tell you about a couple of very special people who came into mine and Natalie's lives this summer: Cam Kramer and Megan Serrano, both high school seniors at Honeoye Falls-Lima.

As part of HF-L's curriculum, many students are required to complete an internship. We've worked with HF-L frequently in the past taking on interns, and have had really wonderful experiences with the program. Since we'd had such good experiences in the past, we knew that this summer's interns (Cam and Megan) would do a good job. However, we soon found out that "good" was underestimating them. Both Cam and Megan absolutely blew us away with their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm.

Both interns were reliable, energetic and so much fun to work with. Cam was fantastic at anticipating Natalie's needs while helping on shoots, and his cheerful demeanor made him the new best friend of every client we had this summer! He also knows how to tie a necktie- a skill that is surprisingly vital in the world of senior portraits (a skill Natalie and I should probably both learn sometime before next summer...).

Megan brought a more quiet, calming energy to our shoots that really put us and our clients (especially children) at ease. While Cam asked lots of questions on shoots, Megan was more of a quiet observer. Towards the end of summer, Megan created a Facebook page to display some of her personal work- and we were blown away when we saw how much she had grown in her photography. Turns out she really had been watching and learning from us the entire summer! We couldn't be prouder of her hard work and growth.

Alas, Cam and Megan had to go back to school in September- and when they left Natalie and I realized just how much we'd come to rely on them. We'd become used to seeing one or both of their smiling faces nearly every day this summer. Cam and Megan: a million thanks for all your help this summer. We think the world of you both and know that you guys will go on to do amazing things. Don't forget your Aunties Kelly & Natalie ;-)

Big Announcement...

Today we have some epic news to share with you! We've known for about a week and have tried to keep quiet, but just can't hold it in any longer. Are you ready? Ok... the big news is....

WE'RE MOVING!!!

Last week we acquired an absolutely beautiful space on the canal in Pittsford (34 State St, right behind the Pittsford Library). We have known for awhile that we needed new office space and in our wildest dreams we hoped to be able to find a place that could accommodate a studio AND viewing appointments, but we never thought we would actually find something so perfect. That's right- Natalie Sinisgalli Photography will now be a one-address operation. Of course we still look forward to many more of the on-location shoots that we've become known for, but it will be very nice to have our studio so close by when we need it!

We haven't moved yet, but hope to be all settled by early November. We'll definitely keep you updated on our progress... as well as our Grand Opening. In the meantime, because we can't have a post without a photo, we leave you with this photo of Natalie and I on the day we signed the lease on our new office...We're so excited!

Kelly here, poking my head above water for a moment to say hi. Hi!! To say that Natalie and I have had a busy summer would be an understatement. Weddings, babies, families... and seniors. So many seniors! The Senior Portrait side of our business has been booming this summer, and we've had a fantastic time trying some new things. The biggest change we've made this summer is that we've begun to offer On-Location Senior Portraits in which we photograph Seniors... on-location (creative title, right?). These sessions have been extremely popular with our clients and incredibly fun for us- it's always good to shake things up, isn't it?

As Senior Season winds down, Natalie and I will be bringing you a few of our favorite Senior Portrait shoots from this summer. Today we'll start with Olivia Hill from Honeoye Falls-Lima.

We loved working with Olivia- she was so bubbly, fun and full of life. Since Olivia loves art, we decided to take her to the ArtWalk area of University Ave. in Rochester. Olivia is also a cheerleader, and we were so excited that she brought her uniform. I think you'll agree that these cheerleading shots are anything but typical though!

The young man pictured with Olivia in the last shot is Cam Kramer, who interned with us this summer- you'll here more about him in the next post. Til then, enjoy Olivia's photos!

Flynn E-Session

How could a shoot that starts out with ice cream be anything but delightful? To kick off Krista & Don's engagement session in Honeoye Falls we stopped first at Dipper Dan's ice cream shop to not only get some fun shots, but to have some delicious ice cream. Next up was the falls, and then back to Krista's dad's house for some vintage style photos with his fully restored model A car. Their adorable dog Chenille helped us finish things up on a walk through the woods behind their house.

Thanks to Krista & Don for having so much fun with us - we can't wait for the wedding!!! Special thanks also to Dipper Dan's for letting us monopolize your entire shop, and to my intern Megan Serrano.

Natalie and I recently had a fantastic shoot in Highland Park with the Pierce Family. Dad Brian is just about the best darn mechanic you will ever meet (seriously, check him out! Pierce Automotive in East Rochester!)... and his wife Courtney turned out to be just as great as he is. And son Noah? Well... we'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Have you seen a sweeter face?

We had such a lovely summer day for Kim & Brent's gorgeous finger lakes wedding on June 26th. Esperanza Mansion provided the perfect scenic backdrop for their country inspired theme, not to mention an awesome reception hall for everyone to have a great time in!

AJ Tierson gave a beautiful ceremony, Don's Own Flowers did a lovely job on Kim and all the girls' bouquets, Nik and the Nice Guys provided the entertainment, and the Club 86 carrot cake was delicious. Many thanks to Heidi the coordinator, for making sure every moment of the day ran smoothly!

Kim and Brent, thanks so much for choosing us to capture your special day. Brad and I are so glad we were a part of it!

Matt and Emilia's Wedding

Natalie and I had the pleasure of returning to Westminster Hall and Chapel on May 28th to photograph Matt and Emilia's wedding! Matt and Emilia are such a sweet couple, and their families were wonderful as well (Matt's brothers especially kept us laughing throughout the night).

Their beautiful wedding, which was planned by Rachel Pasternak of Events Made Easy, featured delicious food catered by Emilia's father's restaurant (American Foundry), the fantastic Cortini Brothers band, absolutely amazing cake by Vanilla Swirl, and even a candy bar! What a beautiful evening- congratulations Matt & Emilia!

Anna and Jeff's Wedding

I could not be happier to share the photos from my friends’ beautiful wedding at Westminster Hall and Chapel in Mendon, NY. Not only did I get to be a part of their wedding (a member of the bridal party), but Anna also let me take photos when I wasn’t busy doing bridesmaid things :0) I couldn’t imagine a more beautiful wedding for my two friends that I have known since they started dating when we were all in 10th grade!! Anna has been one of my closest friends since high school, and I’m just so happy to watch as all her dreams are coming true. Special thanks to both the Hansen and Peters family for sharing this beautiful day with me and Brad, to John of Ecstasy Sound who made the reception an outrageous party, and to Reverend Kris who gave a heartfelt ceremony. Enjoy the photos from this wedding that was absolutely perfect start to Anna and Jeff’s life together.

Lew Engagement Session Video

Shot on the campus of their alma mater SUNY Geneseo, Jackie & John's engagement session was an absolute party! Our entourage included the Mr. & Mrs. to be, myself, my Kelly, my high school intern Cam Kramer, Jackie & John's adorable dog Pua, and their friend Oliver to watch and water the puppy. Jeff and Michelle's Engagement Session

Today Natalie and I are so excited to bring you our first engagement session of 2010! This session was extra exciting for me because the engaged couple, Jeff and Michelle, are good friends of mine.

Jeff and my husband Nate have known each other for almost ten years now, and currently play together in the (super-famous) local band Jae Mood. It was actually at a Jae Mood gig in 2006 that Jeff and Michelle first met. Michelle had come with some friends of hers, and something about Jeff- whether it was his incredible skills with the bass guitar or the fact that he was dressed like a cowboy (it was a Halloween show!)- caught her eye. It's been fun to watch their relationship grow over the years, and I was so thrilled for them when they became engaged recently.

For their engagement session we took Jeff and Michelle to Highland Park, and as you can see we had an absolutely beautiful day. I have to say that Natalie did a fantastic job of capturing Jeff and Michelle's essence- laid back, sweet, and so much fun. Natalie and I are really looking forward to photographing their wedding next summer!

Day at the Park with Brody

Spring has sprung, and not a moment too soon! Natalie and I have had some wonderful sessions this winter, but we've really been itching to get outdoors and do some shooting. Luckily we were given that exact opportunity this past Sunday with one of the most charming babies we know, Mr. Brody Bockus.

You may have seen some photos we took of Brody at the beach back in September when he was just 8 months old. Brody stole our hearts then with his deep dimples and toothless smiles, so we were thrilled when Brody's parents Melissa and Brian wanted to take some spring photos. We headed to a blooming Highland Park this past Sunday for an afternoon of fun with the Bockus crew.

Brody is still mostly toothless, but he's now walking, running, and even trying to talk! Natalie and I enjoyed having the following in-depth conversation with the Brodster:

Brody: "Ah buuum? Ah bum ah bum ah bum ah bummmmm?"
Us: "Oh? A bummm!"
Brody: "A bum a bum a bum."

And so on.

We had a great time with Brody, but Melissa and Brian were also a ball to work with. One of the things we love best about this job is getting to photograph our clients families as they grow up, expand and change. We definitely look forward to hanging out with Brody Bockus as he grows up and has more to say!

College 101 : Planning & Paying For College

Over the weekend I had the privilege of sitting in on an amazing (and free!) workshop given by John Lanphere, an educational consultant of the Mendon chapter of College Assistance Plus. The aim of the presentation was to provide parents of high school freshman, sophmore and junior students with information on what to focus on during High School, how to avoid huge college debt, and help to take the stress out of the college process.

There were also muffins. This workshop was attended by clients of his, prospective clients, his wonderful wife Sue, and someone who just happened to be walking by! There is no obligation or pressure to sign up with the CAPlus program, although I personally believe that your money could not be better spent (except maybe with me :0) ) if you have kids in high school, or are yourself a high school student planning on attending college, or even if you are already in college.

The Birdy and The Bean

Today I (Kelly, that is) wanted to share a story with you about a recent newborn photo shoot we did that has been on mine and Natalie’s minds. This is a bit of a departure from our usual posts and it may not be the easiest to read, but I think you’ll understand why we wanted to share this family’s story of loss and love.

I first met Lucinda Snyder a few years ago when I was a customer of the beautiful yarn store she owned in the South Wedge of Rochester, Wild Wools. I enjoyed frequenting the tiny shop that housed hundreds of skeins of yarn and one great big dog (Lucinda’s 130-pound Great Pyrenees, Bailey), and was sad when the shop closed down a few years after opening.

Good things were in store for Lucinda, though. She had fallen in love with a wonderful man named Jamey. They eloped in Las Vegas on New Years Eve, and introduced their dogs to each other- great big Bailey and tiny Sabre, Jamey’s lap dog. Soon they had even more to be excited for when they found out that Lucinda was pregnant with a baby boy.

Cooper Austin Snyder Gerenski was born on Thanksgiving Day, 2008- and Lucinda and Jamey were so very thankful for their little boy. The joyous occasion of his birth was tempered with worry though, when it was discovered that Cooper had been born with a hole in his heart that would need to be repaired with surgery. The surgery was scheduled for December 17th- but in the meantime, Lucinda and Jamey could bring their little boy, who they nicknamed “Birdy”, home to nest.

Lucinda, Jamey, Cooper and the dogs quickly settled into a routine. Cooper was introduced to family and friends. He was dressed up in cute onesies, and sweaters and booties hand knitted by Lucinda. For 20 days Cooper was kissed and cuddled and soothed and loved immensely by his family. On December 17th Lucinda and Jamey brought Cooper to Golisano Childrens Hospital for open heart surgery. They were terrified, but hopeful- Cooper was in good hands with the talented and caring doctors and nurses at Golisano.

Sweet Cooper made it through the difficult surgery, and his prognosis was good. Lucinda and Jamey slept that night at the Ronald McDonald house at Golisano, so that they could be close to their little boy. They awoke the next morning not knowing that their lives were about to change forever.

On December 18th, 2008 at 10:20 am, for reasons that to this day no one really knows, Cooper’s heart stopped and he could not be revived. That day Lucinda and Jamey’s hearts broke into a million pieces.

How does one survive the death of a child? How do you keep on living? Lucinda and Jamey were understandably devastated. Lucinda’s blog Luc Ends, which had started as a way to keep family and friends updated on Cooper, now became a vessel into which she poured her grief- and something more.

Lucinda had always been the creative type, and even in the midst of her grief her creativity began to blossom. Cooper’s memorial service was scheduled for May, when the trees and flowers would be in bloom. Lucinda decided that she wanted to make something to contribute to the service. Since Cooper’s nickname had been Birdy, Lucinda decided to knit colorful stuffed birds that could be hung on a tree at his outdoor service. However as Lucinda began to knit, another idea started to take shape. She knew that Golisano Childrens Hospital performed about 270 heart surgeries on children each year- what if every child could get a bird? The birds could be a symbol of hope, a message of comfort to the childrens’ families- a message that someone out there, someone who had been in their very shoes, was thinking of them and wishing them well. Lucinda knew she couldn’t knit all those birdies alone- and so she turned to her readers.

On March 2nd, 2009, Lucinda posted an entry explaining her idea and asking her readers to help her by knitting or sewing some birds of their own. With that post, Cooper’s Flock was born- and soon birdies began flying in from readers all over the country. Word spread, and by the time of Cooper’s memorial service in May there were over 300 birds. As Lucinda and Jamey stood that day, surrounded by family and friends who had come to say goodbye to their little boy, they took comfort in the hundreds of brightly colored birds that covered every tree and rock around them. A few weeks after his service, Lucinda brought Cooper’s Flock to the hospital, where they now provide comfort to hundreds of families.

As devastating as Cooper’s death had been, and as much as they still mourned him, Lucinda and Jamey knew that they wanted to be parents again. Lucinda soon found herself pregnant with another little boy and in an amazing coincidence, she gave birth on another holiday. On February 14, 2010 – the holiday devoted to hearts – Chace Wallace Snyder Gerenski was born. Like his brother, Chace already has a nickname- “Bean”.

Natalie and I had the amazing opportunity to photograph Chace a couple of weeks ago in Lucinda and Jamey’s home in Webster. Chace is a gorgeous baby, serious and alert. His heart is perfectly healthy, and we certainly had the opportunity to hear how healthy his lungs are! We started off downstairs, photographing Lucinda and Chace together. He was a bit cranky, but we were able to get some beautiful pictures.

As Chace started to get sleepy, we decided to move upstairs to his nursery. At this point, I asked Lucinda what she thought about trying to photograph Chace with one of Cooper’s knit birds. As his eyelids drooped, Lucinda grabbed one of Cooper’s birds and handed it to me. Very slowly, so as to not wake him up, I began to slide the bird in between Chace’s hands. He stirred and his eyelids fluttered – and for a moment we all held our breath, afraid he’d wake up. However, his eyes closed again while his fingers found the bird and grasped it tightly. Within moments, Chace was in a deep sleep. As we watched, it felt almost as if both boys were there together- Chace sleeping peacefully with Cooper’s bird. It was a moment that I don’t think Natalie or I will ever forget.

Soon Jamey came home from work and we were able to get some wonderful photos of the entire family- Sabre and Bailey included. Some of our favorite photographs happened when Jamey changed into a tank top that exposed the gorgeous tattoo on his arm that he got in memory of Cooper.

Jamey and Lucinda still have hard days. They are mourning the death of one child while being elated over and building new memories with another child. As we share these photos with you today, we are happy and sad for them, but our hope is that these photographs will give them some sort of comfort. We hope that in the years to come these photographs will serve as a reminder of the love they have for both of their children- the Birdy and the Bean.

Wedding Wire

I'd like to think that Natalie and I are totally hip to all the latest internet trends. We have a website. We have a blog. Facebook? We're all over it.

So you can probably imagine that we were smacking our foreheads pretty hard earlier this week when we quite literally stumbled over the website Wedding Wire. After just a few clicks I couldn't believe that we never knew about it (I am especially shamed, considering I was an internet-savvy bride-to-be not so long ago)! For those of you who are just as in the dark as we are, Wedding Wire is a place where brides can not only get ideas and inspiration for their wedding plans, but also a place where they can connect with local wedding vendors. Vendors can create profiles highlighting their businesses, and even connect with and endorse other vendors that they know and love. How cool is that?

I immediately signed us up and spent most of the day creating our profile. What do you think? Another great thing about Wedding Wire is that brides can review vendors that they've used. If you're a former bride of ours who's wedding we've photographed and you're on Wedding Wire, we would love it if you could leave us a review!

Baby Evan and Family

Today we're so excited to share with you a few photos from one of our favorite recent shoots! Baby Evan was recently adopted from Korea, and we were asked to photograph this beautiful new family. I came armed with a few Korean phrases I had learned from a friend- but it turns out that Evan didn't quite recognize Korean coming from a person with an American accent. Luckily Natalie and I discovered that Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas can bridge all language barriers- as soon as Evan's parents put some music on, he began to dance and have a ball!

We had a deja vu moment when we first arrived and saw that mom Laura was wearing a necklace from none other than Designs by Yan! You might remember that earlier this year we photographed some of Yan's work. Laura was wearing the first piece that we featured in that post- a bird's nest of wire with three pearl eggs inside. Laura told us that her necklace represents her own beautiful nest of three. What a small world!

2009 was a huge year for Natalie Sinisgalli Photography, and we've been working hard to create a website that reflects all of the hard work we've done as well as the changes we've made.

One of the most exciting additions to our website is a whole section devoted to weddings. Yes, we do weddings (and engagement sessions)! We have all sorts of info regarding our wedding packages and products, and a gallery full of the beautiful brides we've photographed (and grooms and wedding parties and cakes and flowers and rings and dancing and...).

We also had so many gorgeous photos of newborn babies that we decided to donate an entire section of our website to them. Take a look at our gallery and see if you can stand the cuteness. We also offer a first-year package for moms and dads who want to record all of baby's milestones, starting with before baby is even born (maternity) and going through that first big birthday (1 year).

2009 was our biggest year yet for Senior Portraits. Our fabulous seniors are a diverse crowd, with interests ranging from trucks to football to music to fashion. You'll see all of this reflected in our Image Gallery, along many lovely variations of the oh-so-classic yearbook photo.

Our Family section is still in tact, but revamped to reflect several of the fun family shoots we've had this year. We've photographed families everywhere from our studio to parks to their own homes, and we've had a blast doing it. When is the last time your family was photographed together? Don't let 2010 go by without recording this precious time in your family's life!

In memorium of Peter James Cannon

As many of you know, I was fortunate enough to take Peter's senior portraits last Summer before his untimely passing this February. I am so very grateful that I got to meet Peter. When Peter arrived to his session he brought an entire suitcase full of clothes, three pairs of skis, 2 sets of ski boots and 2 sets of poles. He greeted me with a big hug, as we are both known to do. Nadine (my intern at the time), Peter and I proceeded to have an absolute blast during what was probably a two hour session. I have often recalled that afternoon in the last few weeks, and I will never forget the energy, charisma and joy he shared with me.

I hope you enjoy this video, it's a compilation of Peter's entire senior portrait session. My thoughts and prayers are with the Cannon family, his friends, teachers, coaches, and with the entire community as we all try to cope with the loss and remember Peter the way he would want to be remembered : smiling.

Kelly Kester is the newest member of the Natalie Sinisgalli Photography family (literally family, everyone else that helps me out has to because they are related to or dating me). I am SO EXCITED to have Kelly with me, she has been my right-hand girl since her first day a couple weeks ago. So if someone answers the phone "Natalie Sinisgalli Photography - this is Kelly" - it's Kelly!

For those long time followers of this blog (i.e. a few months...) you may remember Kelly from "Nate & Kelly's Wedding" [see photo to right]. We first met about a year ago, and it was pretty much love at first sight. I seriously left the wedding consult that night thinking that I wanted to hire her some day. When I asked Kelly to come help me out here at the studio a few weeks ago, she told me that when I left that night we met, she was thinking she'd love to work with me some day! So here we are....

Let's all make Kelly feel welcome!! She's done a wonderful job at basically everything I've had her help me with thus far, including the previous blog post and the last couple week's worth of facebook posts. You can assume that most posting will be thanks to Kelly at least until the end of the year when I get a chance to catch my breath, except for the posts where I brag about how wonderful Kelly is, like this one :0)

MCC's Chinese Cultural Club presented "China Night" last Saturday at the MCC theater - an exhibition of traditional and modern Chinese music and dance.

Congrats to all the dancers, crew, choreographers, Chinese Cultural Club members, and sponsors that made this such a wonderful show. Thanks to Brad for carrying my equipment, and Virgilio for keeping him company during the 3 hour event :0)

Dining & Drumming Under the South African Stars

Below are photos from an event I shot at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairport. All proceeds from the event went to Water for Sudan, an organization committed to bringing clean drinking water to rural parts of southern Sudan. The evening included traditional South African food, crafts, and drumming.
